The shortest of our day walks, and the one most guests do first. From the lodge you follow the opening stretch of the South Coast Track along the coastal terrace, then drop down a long flight of steps through fern-filled forest to the swingbridge over the Waikoau River.
Cross the bridge, wander out to the river mouth and the beach beyond, then head back the way you came. It’s a great leg-stretch after a long drive, or a gentle taster of the track for anyone not doing the full tramp.

Before You Go
The track is well formed, but the steps down to the river are a solid climb on the way back. Wear sturdy shoes — it can be muddy after rain.
Want to keep going? Carry on from the bridge along the beach towards Track Burn, or try our short guest track down to Bluecliffs Beach.
Getting There
The walk starts at the Rarakau car park, right beside the lodge — the same trailhead as the South Coast Track and Hump Ridge Track. Staying with us? Just walk out the door. Day visitors can find parking details on our Carpark page.
