Blowholes Beach is the longest of our day walks — a full day on the South Coast Track, sharing the route with the final day of the Hump Ridge Track. From the lodge you cross the Waikoau River swingbridge, walk the sand of Bluecliffs Beach to Track Burn, then follow the track through coastal forest and over headlands, past Flat Creek, to Blowholes Beach.
Beyond here the track carries on to Port Craig, but for a day walk this is the place to stop, eat your lunch and turn for home — with a hot shower and dinner waiting at the lodge.
Route Sections
Distances and times are approximate and measured from the lodge — allow extra for photo stops, soft sand and the weather.
Highlights
- A remote, rocky beach you’ll likely have to yourself
- Beach, swingbridges, coastal forest and headlands in one day
- A real taste of the South Coast and Hump Ridge tracks without an overnight pack
- Hector’s dolphins are often seen along this coast

Before You Go
This is a long day. Start early, carry lunch, plenty of water, a rain jacket and a warm layer, and let us know your plans before you set out.
Parts of the route are along the beach, so check the tide first, and expect mud on the forest sections after rain. For current track conditions, check with the Department of Conservation.
Getting There
The walk starts at the Rarakau car park, right beside the lodge — the same trailhead as the South Coast Track and Hump Ridge Track. Staying with us? Just walk out the door. Day visitors can find parking details on our Carpark page.
